Logotherapy is the powerful psychospiritual wellness aspect of existential psychology that was developed by Dr. Viktor Frankl who was the successor to Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler in the Third Viennese School of psychiatry. But while Freud assumed that our primarily focus was on winning pleasure and avoiding pain and Adler saw us seeking potency and prestige rather than devaluation, Viktor understood the human need to live with a consistent sense of meaning as the primary motivating factor in the lives, loves and labors of normal men and women.

LOGOTHERAPY'S BASIC CONCEPTS

MANY MORE MEN AND WOMEN NEED TO BE NEEDED BY THE PEOPLE THEY LOVE AND SUPPORT THAN YEARN TO BECOME RICH AND FAMOUS.

THERE IS NO WAY TO LIVE WELL AND TO BETTER GUIDE THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE, THAN BY USING THE LOGOTHERAPY PRINCIPLES OF EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY.

YOU CAN KEEP OTHERS COMMITTED TO YOURSELF AND TO THE COMMUNITY OF COMPANIONS IN WHICH YOU AND THEY FIND CONSISTENT MEANING AND A SENSE OF BELONGING TOGETHER.

Logotherapy is much more about living with a healthy sense of purpose in our normal relationships and activities than by dealing with mental illness through psychotherapy or psychotropic drugs. Therefore we offer neither psychiatric care nor medicinal treatment. Of course, while Logotherapy's powerful insights and methods are intended for normal men and women who seek significance in the midst of life’s complications, they also help heal more frustrated persons regain their psychospiritual perspective and emotional health.

Logotherapy will teach you how to -

LIVE - CONSISTENTLY ACCORDING TO SOUND PSYCHOSPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES,

LOVE - DEEPLY ENOUGH TO MANAGE INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS WELL,

LABOR - BY SHARING THE REWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT WITH YOUR HELPERS,

LEAD - WISELY ENOUGH TO CREATE A GREAT COMMUNITY OF ALERT ACHIEVERS.

The following statements express our basic concepts regarding the practice of Vicktor Frankl and Jard DeVille Logotherapy as interpreted through psychospiritual concerns. Life can be filled with meaning, although there is no one great MEANING OF LIFE written in letters of fire across the sky and valid for all persons in all times and places. Humans, who haven’t even had two identical fingerprints since the beginning of time, are much too individually complex for a one size fits everyone approach.

Every emotionally honest life can become meaningful during the most challenging and difficult of times.

Our basic human motivation is our consistent need to find sound sources of meaning for ourselves in places of the heart where we know we belong.

Liberated souls have the spiritual freedom needed to find a sense of purpose in all we do with the people with whom we share love and support in good times and bad.

We hold the following assumptions about our life and love. Human history reveals that psychospiritual ideals have worked out very well for untold millions of noble souls for many thousand years -- in the real world and our daily lives; of worship and work, love and play; earning and persevering.

  1. The first assumption is that each person is a subjective soul consisting of body (soma), mind (psyche), and spirit (logos). Our bodies and minds supply the tools through which we function while our spirits are what we really are in the great scheme of life and love.

  2. Life has meaning under all circumstances -- during the most benevolent and even the most unfortunate of times. This second assumption is about ultimate meaning as an expression of spiritual grace. This is something mystical all persons will experience consistently when we identify with the Cosmos from which we came and embrace life and love with a spiritual mindset.

  3. Life in the spirit has requirements which persons must fulfill if our choices are to become meaningful. This third assumption, existential meaning focuses our daily lifestyle choices. When embedded in ultimate meaning -- this working meaning can be expressed pragmatically. This is done by projecting the realities of faith, hope and love into society through our spiritual virtues and responsible choices and by following the promptings of a spiritually awakened conscience.

  4. People have a persisting need for meaning although we often have to discover or even create the best purposes of life for ourselves. This fourth assumption is that our search for meaning is the main motivating factor in our attitudes and activities after our primary needs of food, safety and sound health are met. Living meaningfully is more important to most people than grubbing ruthlessly for possessions, prestige, pleasure and power. When we live with a sense of purpose in our activities and attitudes, we can persevere bravely through life’s bad days as well as enjoying satisfying times.

  5. Women and men retain their yearning for psychospiritual satisfaction throughout their entire lives. Assumption five is that we are free and competent enough to focus our need for meaning and that this can be done under any and all circumstances. It includes a victory of positive attitudes, high expectations and responsible choices despite any and all painful events. Viktor Frankl became a great model of a soul who courageously faced suffering and possibly an ignominious death without losing the sense of purpose that he found in treating patients medically and emotionally as the death camp doctor. Even in the anteroom of the German hell, he kept his life meaningful and filled with purposeful choices.

  6. Each individual is a unique soul consisting of his or her own physical, psychological and philosophical values, attitudes, expectations, beliefs and choices. While we speak of these three traits individually because we cannot write about all of them at once -- in each person’s life they are as inextricably linked together as the ingredients of a cake after it has been baked.
